Where am I coming from ?

So… why did I start this blog and how did I get to it ? Well, it began my first semester at College when I participated in an experimental Freshman Seminar concentrating on the idea of Globalization. I learned about WordPress, Flickr and del.icio.us and how to utilize the internet’s resources. The 15 of us started posting our ideas on our newly designed sites and were excited about our first comments. We were prompted to write about some topics while we wrote about others without the professor’s assignment. We realized that Globalization has an effect not only on our interests on an international scale but on a personal one just as well. So when my class ended in 2006 I changed my blog’s title from “Globalization in the classroom” to “Impressions of my bicultural life”.

Bicultural life ? Hmm… I guess now is the time to introduce and talk about myself. Not too informative or detailed, since I hear one shouldn’t post much personal information on the internet, but just so much so a stranger like you can get an idea of who I am and where I’m coming from when you’re reading my posts.

Bicultural life, yes. I think it has shaped and influenced my outlook on life, people and how things work a whole lot. I feel very fortunate to have grown up this way and to have understood that there is more than one way of thinking or doing something, and even being yourself. There’s rarely a right or wrong, good or bad, a black or white. I have seen it all done differently in two countries, and both seem to work. I grew up in the two extremes: Europe and North America, Germany and the US, Bavaria and Connecticut, a small town and Megalopolis. I could write another blog about the internal contradictions of my listing but that I will leave for another time. As I said, I grew up in Germany, went through the German (College-bound) school system and spoke German as my Native tongue until I was 19. Then I went back to where both of my parents are from, also the country of my citizenship, to study in Virginia. And that’s where I’ll be at least until I graduate in 2010 !
